Ready, Set, Run

I had my six week postpartum check up today and the doctor said I can start working out again! I'm really excited. I've missed running. I just hope it doesn't hurt too much to get back in shape.

We finally went and bought our jogging stroller this past weekend, so with it and the thumbs up I got from the doctor I'm all set. Ryan, Cameron and I went on a walk last night to test the stroller out and we were very impressed. It's going to work great for all kinds of activities! I'm really going to enjoy using it this spring and summer.

Please ignore my dorky looking outfit. I don't normally sport my tennis shoes with this skirt but I really didn't feel like changing clothes before we left.

That's all I've got for now, I'll keep you posted on how the runs go. I'm guessing I'll be experiencing a whole lot soreness for awhile.

Daddy's Girl

Everyone told us that it was going to happen...Cameron would wrap her daddy around her finger. Well, I think it's safe to say that it's happened! These precious pictures are the proof...

Ginormous Bananas

My friend Christi does this thing with her little boy where she takes his picture with ginormous things. For example, a Super Monster burrito from Freebirds. It's really funny because when you have a tiny little baby next to these types of things they look extra huge. When I was at the grocery store last night getting bananas I had the choice between getting extra large sized bananas and super extra large sized bananas! Honestly, they are the biggest bananas I've ever seen in my whole life. Needless to say, Christi's brilliant idea popped into my head and I decided that I needed to photograph Cameron with the banana. So, here you go...

Seriously, look at the size of that banana! Just one of those bad boys could be an entire meal. HA

Here are a few other photos of our blue eyed beauty. As a side note, these little nightgowns are awesome! Cameron just got big enough to wear the ones that we have for her and we love them. It's makes it so easy to change diapers.

Angelcare

It took awhile, but we finally set up the Angelcare monitor in Cameron's crib. Angelcare monitors are really neat, they have a sensor that detects the baby's movement and it alerts you when there isn't any movement for 20 seconds. They are supposed to help prevent SIDS. I pray that I NEVER hear that alarm go off, but it is nice to know that it's there just in case.

I wanted to wait until the monitor was set up before we had Cameron start sleeping in her crib. I know I'm probably being paranoid, but I feel much better having it in there.

Now, with the monitor all set up, we've been having Cameron take her naps in her own room. It seems like she really likes her bed, I'm so excited! HOWEVER, I'm not ready to have her sleep in there at night quite yet - thinking about that makes me too sad. I don't want her to grow up yet :-/. We'll probably give it another week or so and make the transition. Mommy needs some time to mentally prepare. (I know, I know I'm a complete nerd!)

Here's our little peanut in her crib.

Health Care

When I set up this blog I intended to use it solely to keep everyone updated on our family. But I feel so strongly about the negative impact that the newly passed health care bill is going to have on our country that I wanted to take a quick detour from the family updates and share my thoughts.

My comments are based on my understanding of the bill, and since it is over 2000 pages long and I haven't actually read it word for word, I can't promise that I've interpreted everything correctly. So I apologize for any statements that are inaccurate. But as you read through the rest of this post keep in mind, you probably haven't read the 2000+ page document and don't fully understand the bill either. I wonder if the members of House and Senate have actually read it and fully understand its impact?

1) This bill includes funding for abortion. How on earth is it okay to include something like abortion in a national health care plan? The language of the bill was changed so that federal funds are restricted from being used to pay for most abortions - which is good - but there is an exception for pregnancy's resulting from rape and incest or in cases where the mother's health is at risk. I know these are horrible situations and my heart goes out to those who have to deal with them. However, a life is a life and it is not our job to decide when to terminate life. That's God's job. If it's legal for women to get abortions in these situations, I can't stop them. They have the freedom to make that choice. I wish they wouldn't make the choice to terminate a life, but it's not my decision. However, I certainly do not want my tax dollars paying to support that decision. Look at the pictures of little Cameron on this blog and think about that.

2) This bill requires that all individuals purchase health insurance or else face a fine. Last I checked, this is a free country. What if I don't want to purchase health insurance? What if I decide I would rather take the risk and pay out of pocket for any injures or illness that I experience? I'm not saying that I would advise people to do this, but is it right to take away that option?

3) This bill says that insurance companies cannot deny coverage based on preexisting conditions. So, if a person breaks his leg and needs health care, he can go purchase a policy to help cover the cost. Then, when he is healthy again, he can cancel the policy. The problem is that people end up only paying monthly premiums when they are in need of health care and never when they're healthy. Right now the system works because everyone is continually paying into a pool of funds that are then used to cover the cost of submitted claims. If people aren't paying into the system on a regular basis because they know they can get coverage at any time, then the pool is not big enough to cover everything...then what happens? Who's going to pay? My guess is these costs will fall on the taxpayers. Is it right to use tax dollars to pay for a flawed system?

Many people may then ask the question: If we don't allow people access to coverage regardless of preexisting condition, then what happens if poor little Susie doesn't have coverage and gets sick? Should she be expected to pay for her health care costs on her own? YES! She took the risk and didn't get insured. Why should anyone else be obligated to pay for her care? I know it sounds harsh, but people need to be held accountable for their decisions.

In reality, our current system doesn't leave people out to dry in these situations. Every American has access to health care. In cases where a person doesn't have coverage and isn't able to pay, programs are available to help them out, and if worse come to worse they can visit an emergency room. The emergency room can't turn anyone away. Health care rates and taxes go up when this system is abused, but claiming that Americans don't have access to health care is completely inaccurate. So again I ask you, does it make sense to guarantee a person coverage regardless of preexisting conditions on the basis that they can't get care otherwise?

4) This bill will set up state-based exchanges for uninsured and self-employed individuals and small businesses to purchase insurance. Picture a DMV, but for health insurance...doesn't that sound nice? There would be funds available for states to set up these exchanges. Where would these funds come from? Most likely they would come from taxes, in other words you and me. Does this seem right?

5) I'm a little unclear about what exactly this bill is mandating for larger employers. I tried to look at the bill online to see, but it is too long and too confusing to figure out. From what I can gather, if large employers do not offer health care to their employees they will be required to pay a fee to employees who require government subsidies to purchase their coverage. If they don't, the employer will receive a hefty fine from the government each year. Why should a business owner be forced to offer health care or help fund an employees' individual health care plan? Health insurance is a benefit, an add on, an incentive. An employer should have the freedom to chose if and how they contribute towards their employees health insurance? Shouldn't they be allowed that flexibility? If an employee is unhappy with the benefits offered by their employer, they have the option of getting a job at another company. By no means are they stuck in a hopeless situation.

So what's this going to do to our economy? Businesses who can't afford these expenses on top of everything else are going have to either lay off employees, make pay cuts or, in some extreme situations, close their doors. Now tell me, does that seem like a way to help business prosper?

Like I said, the bill is over 2000 pages long, so this just brushes the surface. I just wish that Washington put a little more energy into actually listening to what Americans are saying. People are making fun of the "tea parties" but really, those are Americans just like you and me who want to be heard. Why on earth would they be completely ignored and/or antagonized? Our representatives were elected to do exactly that represent us, not decide what is right FOR us.

Don't get me wrong, I think there needs to be a change in our health care system to help get costs and rates under control. Health care is way too expensive and confusing right now and the way the insurance companies plays into the equation can definitely be improved. I just don't think creating a national system that puts the government in charge is the answer. I want Ryan and I to be able to call the shots for our family, I don't want decisions to be dictated to us by some bozo in Washington.

Ultimately, like everything else in life we have to put this all in God's hands and know that He is in charge. At the end of the day, He wins and that's the most important thing.

That's my two cents, take it or leave it. Sorry if I have offended anyone. I intended only to share my perspective, not to insult other opinions. You are welcome to have your own perspective. After all, this is a free country! :-)

Okay, detour complete, back to updates on the Volk family.

Happy Spring!

Go Bears!

The Baylor men made it to the sweet sixteen in the basketball tourney. Go Bears! The game yesterday afternoon wasn't on TV in Colorado, which was a bummer, but we were thrilled that they won. It's so nice to see them doing this well with all the program has had to overcome since the "scandal" back in 2003. Hopefully they'll stay on a roll and make it through a few more rounds.

Even though we're not in Texas anymore, we're are still huge fans of all things Baylor. Here we are sporting our green and gold yesterday.

This is the very first Baylor hat that Ryan ever bought... nice and "loved"

March Snowstorm

We had a little bit of a snowstorm yesterday. Most of the snow is gone today...that's Colorado for you! My mom bought this little pink snowsuit for Cameron on sale for $5. Since we're getting close to the end of the snowy season, I figured we should probably get her dressed up and go test the suit out in the snow. It's a newborn size but it completely engulfed her! HA I promise, she's in there, you just have to look past all the pink.

St. Patty's Day

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Cameron and I met Ryan for lunch today at the Pumphouse for St. Patrick's Day. We had Corned Beef and Cabbage and Irish Beef Stew. It was mighty yummy. Hope everyone has a fun and safe St. Patty's Day. Here's our little leprechaun.

Family Walk

It was a beautiful day on Saturday so Ryan, Cameron and I went on our first walk together. Cameron liked it. She conked out about 10 minutes in, but that's okay, I would have too if I had someone carrying me around like that.

We took a couple video clips of this momentous occasion, and I decided to play around with the editing software that comes with the flip camera. Here's what I came up with...

It's not spectacular, but I figure you have to start somewhere!

On a side note, it's so strange to hear yourself on recordings like this... I sound like such a nerd! It's just so weird that is how I sound to everyone else.

Photo Shoot

We are having so much fun taking pictures of Cameron. She is just so darn cute (at least I think so, but I'm supposed to think that, I'm her mother!) On Saturday morning I think I took about 100 pictures before we even got out of bed, we were just laying there playing with her and she was making the cutest faces! Thank goodness for digital cameras.

One Month Old!

Cameron is One Month Old!

March 13, 2010
Weight: 8 pounds, 12 ounces
Length: 20.75 inches
Head: 37 centimeters

I can't believe our little munchkin is already one month old! We took Cameron to her one month check up on Thursday and the pediatrician said she is a very health girl. She is in the 50th percentile across the board. Healthy weight gain, good looking skin, strong reflexes, regular bowel movements...everything is going great!

So Cameron, what are you up to at one month old?
  • You love to snuggle up on our chests and sleep.
  • You are a good eater and eat about 7-10 times a day.
  • Most nights you have one 4-5 hour stretch between feedings.
  • You sleep in your Pack n' Play in Mommy and Daddy's room.
  • You grunt all the time! It's really cute and pretty funny.
  • You found your thumb, so we started to give you a pacifier so thumb sucking doesn't become a habit.
  • You are already quite the drama queen with your dramatic stretching and funny faces.
  • You have a really strong neck and can already lift up your head for short periods of time.
  • You are starting to enjoy bath time.
  • You are still wearing your newborn clothes, but not for long.
  • You get really big hiccups every once in awhile and sound like a little squeaky toy.
  • You are a beautiful little girl and your Mommy and Daddy love you very much!

The Weekend

Here's latest update on Team Volk. Nothing too exciting, just a fairly normal weekend...

Friday afternoon Ryan's office had a shower for Cameron. It was really nice. We are so lucky that Ryan works with such a great group of people.

On Saturday we spent the morning at home and then went on a field trip to Costco to get a flip camera! I'm really excited about the flip camera, it's so easy to use and so much fun to have videos of Cameron being awesome.

Sunday we ventured to church for the first time since Cameron was born. Honestly, I wasn't that excited about going because our church is so incredibly crowded, but everything ended up working out just fine. We sat in the cry room with all the other little babies, which was nice. With all the distractions it's kind of hard to focus on the service from there, but it's good that we don't have to worry about bothering others.

Sunday night we had dinner with our small group and Cameron got to meet some new friends (and protectors, according to Morgan and Averie who decided that they were superheros with the responsibility of protecting Cameron from the monster that wanted to eat her!).

Here are a few other pictures from the last few days:

Well that's all I've got for now. I've got to go feed the little munchkin. I'll post some videos from the flip camera soon!

Bath Time

I think Cameron is actually starting to like bath time! My mom and I gave her a bath yesterday afternoon and she didn't cry at all. I was so excited. Here's a little video clip so you can see. (I was experimenting with my parent's flip camera. It was super easy to use. I think I'm going to buy one!)

P.S. Notice how Cameron is grunting through the entire video...she does this all the time! It's kind of funny, but I'm still trying to figure out whether or not it's normal. Those of you with kids, did your newborns grunt like this?

A Big Weekend

Last weekend was very eventful for our little Cameron, her Aunt Annie and Cousin Cole made a special trip from Texas just so they could meet her! Cole is just over a year old now, so it was really fun to see his reaction to Cameron. To be honest, I don't know if he really knew what to think of her. He was very curious and would just stare at her in her car seat. A couple times when Annie was holding Cameron, Cole got a little jealous and we saw a few tears. I completely understand, after all that is HIS mommy, what the heck was she doing holding this strange little baby?

On Friday, Annie, Kathy and Cole went with Cameron and me to run some errands. I needed to get a few more items from Babies-R-Us. The closest Babies-R-Us store is all the way down in Westminster which is hugely inconvenient for us to get to, so I really appreciated their company. Before we left, we met the guys for lunch at Panera. It was Cameron's first meal out and she did great! It's not as hard to take a baby out as I thought it was going to be. I guess the biggest thing is to make sure she's covered up so that she doesn't get exposed to people who are sick.

Before we left Panera I tried to feed Cameron, but of course, she didn't want to eat until we were in the middle of Babies-R-Us. I had to park myself in one of the sample glider chairs in the middle of the store so I could feed her. Thanks to my handy hooter hider, I was able to pull it off no problem and we were back to shopping in no time!

The rest of the weekend we spent a lot of time over at Clair and Kathy's house just hanging out. It was a lot of fun, but I was exhausted by the time the weekend was over.

For some reason I didn't get very many pictures with my camera this weekend. So I stole a few from Annie's blog. Also, Annie has a really cute video of Cameron with the hiccups on her blog. It's funny because every once in awhile she'll get these HUGE hiccups and she sounds like a little squeaky toy. It's hard to believe such big hiccups are coming out of such a little girl! Click here to check out the video.
